Frank Burrows

Manager from May 1979 to May 1982 & January 1990 to March 1991

As a player, Frank Burrows was a tough, uncompromising defender and helped Swindon Town to promotion from the Third Division and to a shock League Cup Final victory over Arsenal.

After 297 League appearances for the Robins, he became their assistant manager but in 1978 joined Pompey as coach. He succeeded Jimmy Dickinson as Pompey's manager and led the club to promotion to the Third Division in his first season in charge.

After they had consolidated their status in the Third Division, he left to take charge at Cardiff City, but in 1989, he returned to Fratton Park to work as John Gregory's assistant. When Gregory moved on he took charge for a second time. However, the results were poor and in March 1991, he resigned his position as manager, later taking over at Swansea City.

He returned to manage Cardiff, overseeing their promotion to Division Two in 1999. From 2000 until 2004, Burrows was assistant manager to Gary Megson at West Bromwich Albion and helped them win promotion to the Premiership twice. Burrows took charge of two games as caretaker-manager following Megson's departure, but left the Hawthorns once Bryan Robson arrived.
