Match Report
Ipswich v Portsmouth 07 January 2006 (FA Cup)
Silva wins it for Pompey
Ipswich 0 - 1 Portsmouth
Dario Silva scored the only goal as Portsmouth beat Ipswich 1-0 at Portman Road in the FA Cup third round.
The Uruguayan's headed strike proved the difference between the two sides, as Joe Royle's Ipswich failed to make the most of their opportunities.
The home side started brightly against their Premiership opponents, with Darren Currie and Ian Westlake both shooting wide of Sander Westerveld's goal.
At the other end, Gary O'Neil was also unable to find the target after taking a Brian Priske pass before new permanent signing Gavin Williams had a dangerous close-range shot blocked away.
The visitors had a spell of possession but failed to make the most of it, with Matthew Taylor failing to test Ipswich goalkeeper Shane Supple with a weak header.
Town then created their best chance of the half when Scott Barron's cross from the left failed to reach Daniel Haynes in front of goal, but Dejan Stefanovic's clearance fell invitingly for Williams.
However, with the goal at his mercy, the former Yeovil Town and West Ham United man shot wide of Westerveld's goal - much to the disbelief of the home fans.
Ipswich's misfortune proved costly eight minutes before the break, as Pompey scored against the run of play.
As the visitors counter-attacked, Taylor received on the left-hand side before playing a fine far-post cross to Silva, who headed home past Supple to give the Pompey the lead.
They nearly doubled their advantage moments later, but Tresor Lomana Lua Lua curled his right-foot effort just wide before Taylor forced a good diving save from Supple, as Pompey took their one-goal lead into the break.
The second half saw Ipswich press to find an equaliser, but not before Fabian Wilnis denied Lua Lua with two challenges soon after the restart.
He blocked the Portsmouth striker's shot in the Ipswich box before brilliantly tracking back to take the ball off the striker's foot, as Lua Lua had broken free before bearing down on goal.
Ipswich should have pulled level from a long Supple clearance forward, as Haynes was able to win possession before having a turn and shot that agonisingly rolled across the face of Westerveld's goal and just wide.
The home side were then further frustrated when Stefanovic blocked away a close-range shot after a dangerous Ipswich free kick before Williams was high and wide with a shot moments later.
Ipswich's Richard Naylor then went close with a far-post header from substitute Castro Sito's cross from the right.
Town kept pressing to the final whistle, but Westerveld was on hand to collect any balls into the Portsmouth box, as the South Coast club went through to Monday's fourth round draw.
