Portsmouth's unbeaten start to their first ever Premiership season finally came to an end at the hands of Blackburn at Fratton Park.
First-half goals from Lucas Neill and Andy Cole did the damage for the visitors, although Arjan De Zeeuw gave Harry Redknapp's men a lifeline with just over half an hour left.
Popmey were slow out of the blocks despite enjoying some good early possession and they failed to get a grip on the game as Blackburn became more and more threatening.
A Tugay shot out of nothing on 25 minutes gave a sign of things to come and nearly caught Hislop off-guard, but the Pompey keeper managed to get down to his right just in time to palm the ball wide for a corner.
The breakthrough was only seven minutes away though as Neill stabbed the ball home after Portsmouth failed to clear their lines on three occasions following a quick free-kick on the edge of the box.
The lead was doubled just seven minutes later when Cole turned on a sixpence to beat three defenders and side-foot the ball comfortably past Hislop into the far corner.
Pompey had a penalty appeal turned down as the half came to a close when Brad Friedel brought down Yakubu as he ran to the byline, and then Teddy Sheringham was presented with a great opportunity in injury time but failed to connect.
A positive start to the second half lead to De Zeeuw's lifeline as he towered over the Rovers defence to head past Friedel from a Steve Stone corner to give the home side a glimmer of hope.
That lifted Pompey and from then on they had the best of the possession and chances but were unable to convert any of them as poor finishing and bad luck in front of goal spoiled some positive build-up play.
The final nail was almost hammered into Pompey's coffin 13 minutes from time as Brett Emerton's 20-yard shot rattled the bar during a rare Rovers break, but ultimately the home side were punished for a poor first-half perfomance.
