Withina minute he had an even beater opportunity to score when he curled a shot just wide from just inside the box when he looked offside.

Rory Delap had a couple of long-range shots and Paul Telfer had a good shot charged down as the visitors crept back into the match before the break.
The second half had plenty more endeavour and energy but neither goalkeeper was seriously troubled with just a Sheringham volley and James Beattie looping header to show for both team's efforts.
Then, the breakthrough came on 68 minutes as Pompey got reward for their efforts as Yakubu Aiyegbeni put them ahead from close range after a good move.
Alexei Smertin picked out Steve Stone on the right with a neat pass and his cross was inch-perfect for Yakubu to tap home from five yards to send Fratton Park wild.
