Portsmouth v Charlton 22 October 2005

Addicks back into second

Portsmouth 1 - 2 Charlton

Charlton have moved back into second in The Premiership after coming from behind to claim a 2-1 win at Portsmouth.

Pompey were the better side in the first half and led at the break thanks to Dario Silva's first goal for the club after 14 minutes.

However, it was a different story after the interval with Darren Ambrose and Dennis Rommedahl giving The Addicks the points.

The home side were quick out of the blocks with Laurent Robert coming close on two occasions to opening to scoring for the South Coast outfit.

Firstly the former Newcastle United man had a long-range effort tipped wide by Stephan Andersen before he saw a free-kick drift just wide of goal.

Shortly after Charlton saw Radostin Kishishev and Hermann Hreidarsson go into referee Howard Webb's notebook the home side took the lead.

Andy O'Brien's long-ball caught Hreidarsson out and Silva made no mistake with the finish from an angle slotting past Andersen into the far corner.

Zvonimir Vukic continued to exert pressure on Charlton and his shot narrowly drifted over the visitors' bar from distance.

The Addicks finally found some rhythm after the half hour mark when winger Ambrose twice forced Jamie Ashdown into a save.

Firstly the ex-Magpie latched onto Darren Bent's through-ball and stung Ashdown's hands before his long-range effort was well-held by the Pompey keeper.

Marauding defender Matthew Taylor had the final effort of the first half, but his well-struck left-footed effort flashed wide of Andersen's far post.

The visitors made a bright start to the second period, but Pompey created the first opportunity when Vukic pulled the trigger from just inside the box.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk star jinked past two defenders before seeing his left-footed effort well saved down to his left by Andersen.

Just minutes later and the match was all-square with Ambrose, who came close to scoring in the first half, levelling the game.

Danny Murphy was the architect with his superb through-ball sending Ambrose clear and he made no mistake with a clinical finish into the corner.

Pompey were clearly shaken up by the goal and almost fell behind when Bent capitalised on Gregory Vignal's poor back pass, but his cross was not converted by Ambrose in the middle.

The home side hit back and Robert was inches from restoring their lead when his flashed venomous shot drifted just over from the angle.

With just 13 minutes on the clock the comeback was complete with Rommedahl producing a top-drawer to give the visitors the lead.

The Danish winger was left all alone from Murphy's incisive through-ball and he gave Ashdown no chance of a save with a top-corner shot.

Vukic had a chance to late on to earn a share of the spoils but his finish lacked quality and his hooked effort few harmlessly over the bar.
