Portsmouth v Leicester 29 November 2003

FOXES HUNT DOWN POMPEY

Portsmouth 0-2 Leicester

Leicester City continued their recent good form by picking up their second successive away win with an impressive 2-0 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday afternoon. Goals in each half from Les Ferdinand and Marcus Bent were enough to give Micky Adams' men all three points and inflict a second successive defeat on Pompey.

After a quiet start Portsmouth began to find their feet and came close to breaking the deadlock on nine minutes when Sheringham got on the end of Patrik Berger's in-swinging corner, but his header just flashed wide of the target.

The home side continued to push forward and defender Arjan de Zeeuw had a good chance when found himself free in the box on 16 minutes, but he dragged his shot harmlessly wide.

Nigeran ace Yakubu Aiyegbini went close a minute later when he latched onto Hayden Foxe's long ball and fired in a powerful left-foot shot which fizzed just wide of Ian Walker's near post.

The Foxes opened the scoring very much against the run of play just past the half hour with Ferdinand blasting a free kick from 25 yards past Harald Wapenaar although the ball did take a slight deflection off the Pompey wall to deceive the goalkeeper.

The game burst into life in the second half and Leicester almost caught Portsmouth cold a minute after the restart with Bent forcing Wapenaar into a fine save with a well-struck shot from the edge of the area.

Portsmouth should have drawn level two minutes later when a free kick into the box broke loose to Foxe with the goal at his mercy, but Ben Thatcher got across to keep out his goalbound shot.

Leicester goalkeeper Ian Walker had a lucky escape on 56 minutes when he spilled the ball under a challenge from Aiyegbini, but the striker on the ground could not direct his shot into the unguarded net.

The visitgrs doubled their lead on 59 minutes with Bent shrugging off the attentions of Dejan Stefanovic inside the box before coolly prodding Muzzy Izzet's free kick home with a controlled volley.

Portsmouth almost found a way back into the contest a minute later with Sherwood playing Aiyegbini through on goal, but Walker bravely dived at the striker's feet to keep him out.

The home side laid siege to the visitors goal and were unlucky not to pull a goal back on 70 minutes when substitute Matt Taylor struck the crossbar with a brilliant volley from an acute angle after being superbly picked out by Sherwood.
